Bolton is a town in Greater Manchester, and a major textile and cotton-spinning centre during the Industrial Revolution. Samuel Crompton, a Bolton native, invented the spinning mule here in 1779, and at its peak in 1929 the town had over 200 cotton mills. As cotton manufacturing fell away through the 20th century the town declined, then saw regeneration from the 1990s. Today Bolton and the wider borough are home to around 300,000 people, with an economy of owner-managed and family businesses, manufacturing, engineering and services.
