April 15, 2025, is the federal tax filing deadline in America, but what if you’re not ready?

Some people are still waiting for key documents, dealing with unexpected life events, or just need more time. So, knowing how to request a tax extension can be a lifesaver.

Federal tax extension moves 2024 filing deadline to October 15, 2025

However, this extension applies only to filing, not to payment. You still need to estimate and pay any taxes owed by April 15 to avoid interest and late-payment penalties.

There are two main ways to request an extension from the IRS:

  1. File IRS Form 4868

This is the official Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File. You can file it electronically using tax software or submit a paper form by mail.

  1. Pay Part of Your Tax Bill Online

If you make a payment via IRS Direct Pay, EFTPS, or debit/credit card, you can select “Extension” as the reason. The IRS treats that as a valid extension request, and you don’t need to file Form 4868 separately.

Special Considerations for U.S. Expats

If you’re a U.S. expat and don’t owe taxes, you’re in luck! The IRS automatically grants a two-month extension to file your tax return. This extension applies to those living and working abroad, or are in the military on duty outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico. The extension gives you until June 16, 2025 to file (since June 15 falls on a Sunday).

If you’re a U.S. expat and need more time to file beyond the automatic two-month extension, you can request an additional extension until October 15, 2025.

The way to do this is by filing Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. You don’t need to provide a specific reason for requesting the extension. It’s an automatic extension upon filing the form correctly and on time.

You can file Form 4868 electronically through IRS e-file using tax software or hire our tax professionals to do it for you.
