What Happens Next and How to Put It Right

The first quarterly deadline under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax fell on 7 August 2026, and there is no fine for missing the Making Tax Digital deadline. HMRC has built a first-year soft landing into Making Tax Digital, which removes penalty points and fines for late quarterly updates in the 2026/27 tax year.

A large share of people who were meant to file did not. According to an analysis of HMRC data, around 428,000 taxpayers of the 864,000 people in scope (49.5%) missed the deadline and 436,000 filed on time in the first phase.

Missed Making Tax Digital Deadline? No fine this year!

HMRC is treating 2026/27 as a soft-landing year. No penalty points are issued for late quarterly updates during this period, so missing 7 August does not cost you anything today.

What has not changed is the obligation itself. The soft landing pauses the penalty, not the requirement. The update still has to be filed, and the longer it sits undone, the harder the rest of your year becomes.

Why HMRC is holding back the penalties

Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax is the biggest change to Self Assessment in a generation. From 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income above £50,000 moved from one annual return to four quarterly updates plus a Final Declaration, all filed through compatible software.

HMRC expected a bumpy first cycle, and a miss rate near 50% proved the point. The soft landing gives people room to learn the system, sort out their software, and build the habit before penalties begin.

The hidden cost of delaying your first update

Here is the part that rarely gets mentioned. You cannot file your Final Declaration for the year until all four quarterly updates have been submitted. Skipping the August update does not remove it from the list; it simply moves the work further down the line.

The problem is that it builds up. If you keep putting it off into 2027, the updates start to stack on top of each other. In the worst case, you could end up filing nine separate submissions in a single year:

the four quarters you missed in 2026/27,

the four new quarters for 2027/28, and

your annual Final Declaration.

That is a heavy load to clear in one go. Filing one late update today is far simpler than facing all of that later.

Late filing and late payment are not the same thing

This is where people get caught out. The soft landing covers late quarterly updates. It does not cover late payment of tax.

If you owe tax for 2026/27 and pay it late, penalties can still apply:

If you pay within 30 days of the due date, or agree to a Time to Pay arrangement, there is no late-payment penalty for 2026/27.

After that, a charge of 3% of the outstanding tax applies on day 15, with a further 3% on day 30.

From day 31, interest builds at an annual rate of around 10% until the balance is cleared.

Your 2026/27 tax is due by 31 January 2028. If paying on time looks difficult, contact HMRC early. Arranging a plan before the deadline is what keeps the penalties away.

What changes from April 2027

The soft landing ends with the 2027/28 tax year, when a points-based penalty system takes over:

One penalty point for each missed quarterly update or filing deadline.

A £200 penalty once you reach four points.

A further £200 for every missed deadline after that.

Points below four expire automatically after 24 months.

To clear points once you have reached four, you need to file on time for 12 months and make sure every update and return from the previous 24 months has been submitted. Put simply, the routine you build now, while nothing is at stake, is what protects you once the charges begin.

What to do this week

A missed update is quick to fix. Work through these steps in order:

Confirm MTD applies to you. It is mandatory for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income above £50,000. Below that figure, you may not yet be in scope.

Check that you are signed up. Some people missed the deadline only because their registration had not gone through. Confirm your status with HMRC or your accountant.

Get compatible software ready. Quarterly updates can only be filed through HMRC-recognised software. A spreadsheet on its own will not submit them.

Update your digital records. Enter your income and expenses for 6 April to 5 July 2026 so the figures are ready to send.

File the missed update. Submitting now, even after the deadline, clears the quarter and puts you back on track.

Prepare for the next one. The second update is due on 7 November 2026, so building the habit now makes the rest of the year straightforward.

Let us file your next quarterly update on time.
